The Architectural Phase of Clavos Building Company’s evolutionary process is led by architect, Randy Jacob. Randy is a very creative and approachable person who has a unique talent for deciphering a client’s ‘raw materials’ that represent their dream, unearthing their practical needs and integrating the two paths into an elegant architectural design. Over the course of preliminary conversations, he will listen to the clients as they describe their vision and dream home, translate their desires into something tangible, and ultimately bring their dream into reality. He is driven by the desire to create what the client wants, while keeping within their individual limits, whether it be time, budget or lot considerations.
During this Architectural Phase, there is a prescribed design process that is accomplished through various stages of development. The client is invited to participate fully in this process and is asked to review the stages as they progress to be sure the design is in keeping with their desires and vision.
Schematic Design
This stage takes into consideration both functional and aesthetic aspects of the project, and may include a Site Selection & Analysis report. Functional aspects include code/zoning/design guidelines, and an informal site analysis to assess such details as climate information, sun angle analysis, topography/drainage analysis, and an inventory of existing conditions as required. The aesthetic aspects considered include spatial needs and a Lifestyle Analysis, conceptual diagrams of spatial, circulation, and site elements to be incorporated into the design. Preparations are begun for preliminary site plans, preliminary floor plans, preliminary elevations, and three-dimensional ‘character’ sketches which will be presented to and reviewed by the client.
Design Development
At this stage, previous items are reviewed again, such as code/zoning/design guidelines to be sure the preliminary concepts are within the guides. Refinements are made as necessary to the conceptual and preliminary spatial, circulation and site relationships of the preliminary design. Additional consideration is also given to the interior living space and it’s relationship to the client’s daily needs and preferred style. It is during this time that more in-depth consideration is given to the details of the various home systems to be integrated, such as structural, mechanical, basic lighting and electrical layouts, plumbing, security, home theater and audio needs. If necessary, a scale model or colored renderings are prepared for design review. This stage is concluded with the preparation of ‘hard-line’ site plans, floor plans and elevations.
Construction Drawing and Specification
Upon completion of the earlier stages and client approval, the technical construction drawings are scheduled for completion and the appropriate building permits are submitted to the appropriate building authority. Homeowner selections are also in the process of being specified for such items as appliances, finishes, floorings, cabinetry, hardware, etc..
